A Healthy Diet To Maintain A Healthy Mouth

Oral health is promoted by a healthy and balanced diet

How to keep teeth healthy naturally

Oral health is promoted by a healthy and balanced diet. Some foods can be beneficial for your oral health whilst others should be consumed in moderation.

Certain foods are helpful in maintaining a healthy mouth. Dairy products contain calcium which contributes towards healthy bones. This helps to prevent the demineralisation of teeth. Adequate intake of water maintains good oral hydration and salivary flow.

Avoid foods and drinks that are likely to cause dental problems. Sugar and fizzy drinks should be consumed in moderation. They produce acidic compounds which contribute to the demineralisation of tooth enamel.

Eat good foods

We’re all too aware that eating healthily benefits us in the long run, but did you know that eating certain ‘good’ foods can also help to remove stains from your teeth? Foods such as; apples, pears, celery, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, strawberries and raw vegetables contain natural fibres that combine with saliva to naturally clean teeth and remove bacteria.

Equally there are some foods which can do the opposite and stain teeth quickly. Be careful of coffee, tea, blueberries, blackcurrants, citrus fruit juices, carbonated drinks and red wine. As a rule of thumb, if a food can stain a white cotton shirt, it can stain teeth.
